Laser Assisted Hatching (LAH)

Laser Assisted Hatching (LAH)

Laser-assisted hatching (LAH) is an advanced technology used along with IVF treatment to increase the rate of successful implantation of the embryo.

If you've been through IVF treatment, you're likely aware that a fertilized egg doesn't automatically ensure a pregnancy. Once the embryo is transferred to the uterus, it must implant on the uterine wall for a successful pregnancy to occur. However, there are times when the embryo doesn't hatch and implant, leading to IVF failure.

If you're facing IVF failure due to unexplained reasons or a poor prognosis with IVF treatment, you may be advised to undergo laser-assisted hatching (LAH). The aim of LAH in IVF treatment is to overcome any obstacles preventing implantation or a successful pregnancy.

Procedure

  • LAH procedure is carried out on the 3rd day after the IVF cycle
  • A specialized laser is used to create a breach in zona pellucida
  • Laser technology allows a more controlled approach and is the safest and most effective technique
  • Involves precise procedures and a skilled technician to perform it
  • The embryology lab needs to have specialized instruments to perform this advanced technology
  • The whole process is fairly quick and takes only a few seconds
  • Laser shots are used to soften the zona pellucida, creating an opening
  • The laser does not come in direct contact with the embryo
  • The procedure ensures the safety of the embryo
